New Junior cycle Framework

The rationale for the framework is to provide flexibility and discretion for schools in the curriculum they offer and to best serve the needs of the students and the school. At the core of the framework are twenty four statements of learning underpinned by eight principles. Statements of learning provide a reference point on progress and achievement.

Curriculum – will consist of a range of Subjects, Short Courses and Priority Learning Units (PLU’s). Irish, English and Maths will be taught for 240 hours minimum over three years. Other subjects will be taught for 200 hours minimum. Short courses will require 100 hours over three years. The new Junior Cycle will include:

  • A focus on school based assessment
  • Standardised testing at end second year
  • School Work Component (40%) plus final assessment in June 3rd year (60%)
  • New reporting and certification arrangements

Transition Year Option (TY)

Transition Year is an optional year for students between Junior and Senior Cycle. There is an application process to be completed to secure a place. TY fosters academic, social, vocational, physical and spiritual development through the breadth of activities students are exposed to during the year. Students who complete TY are likely to be more socially aware, more mature and achive better results at Leaving Cert.

Students undertake the same core subjects, sample subjects for the Leaving Cert and undertake a lot of curricular competitions such the Young Scientist, Young Social Innovators and Young Environmentalist. Modules in public speaking, drama and ECDL are completed along many educational trips and fundraising activities. Overall TY is an exciting, challenging and innovative year.
