Pat’s Factor 2018

Pat’s Factor 2018 ended with two acts sharing First place. Joint winners “String Theory” really rocked the place up fronted by lead singer Sean McKiernan.

 

Well done to the St. Pat’s boys pictured above, who got into round 2 of the County Cavan Inter Schools Debating Competition 2018. Team members, Dylan Brady, Barry Flynn, Conor Gannon, and Andrew Gilcreest were complimented by mentors from other schools on their performance. A bit unlucky not to get into the final. Our 31 TYs in attendance were very impressed by the day’s proceedings and while a long day, a lot was learned from the experience. Cavan Town Mayor Madeline Argue, Minister Heather Humphreys and Councillor John Paul Feeley were in attendance. Mary Briody, Mentor. Under 16 Basketball Success

Congratulations to our U16 basketball team and coaches Mr Rowley and Mr McGuigan on winning the North East U16 A Regional Title, beating St Macartan’s Monaghan 48 40.

TY Legal Studies Students attend workshop at the
Criminal Courts of Justice

St. Patrick’s College Law Team along with their teacher Mr. Conor Mc Guigan travelled to the Criminal Courts of Justice Parkgate street Dublin on Thursday 15th November 2018.
The students from St. Pats gained a valuable insight into the workings and structure of the Irish Legal system. This included researching the Legal functions of each of the courts in the land from District Court level to the Supreme Court, the highest court in Ireland.
Students were then provided with an opportunity to tour the Criminal Court building where their tour guide Mr. Darren Lalor BL provided them with a detailed account regarding the layout of the Criminal courtroom and what occurs at each stage of the legal process during a criminal trial. Mr. Lalor also gave students an account of his educational and subsequent Legal journey and what motivated him towards the legal profession.
Students were then invited to view a sitting of the Dublin district Court. The District Court Judge paused proceedings to welcome the students from St. Patrick’s College and provided them with a brief insight of the legal topics under deliberation in her courtroom.
In the afternoon the TY students then viewed a sitting of the High Court. Students were provided with an opportunity to witness the closing arguments from the prosecuting counsel in what was a high profile murder trial. The students from St. Patrick’s College wish to thank the Court Service of Ireland for providing them with an opportunity to visit the Criminal Courts of Justice and look forward to participating at the same venue for the National Mock Trials in April. Congratulations to Ciaran Swift and Tiernan Maguire on winning Ms Kavanagh’s English class poetry competition. Well done! Recently some of our students from TY carried out a fundraiser in Cavan town for the Irish Wheelchair Association. Maura Cooney from the Irish Wheelchair Association (right of photo) organised the fundraiser with help from Ms Murphy, TY Co-ordinator.’ (Report by Conor Gannon). Maths Week was marked in St. Patrick’s College Cavan with a week dedicated to Problem Solving and Mathematics. On Wednesday 24th a Maths quiz was held in the first year canteen for all first years. Ms Corcoran and Mr Quinn along with the TYs organised this event. Six classes participated in the quiz in teams of four students. The first years were extremely enthusiastic especially when the prize of a chicken curry dinner was mentioned. On average there were 7 rounds of questions of ten questions each. Sidas Latvinas and Jack English were MC on the day, while Jamie English and Matthew Chen were in charge of the questions. The other TYs were busy correcting and tallying scores as each round happened. Christian Dunne was the quiz photographer. Futsal Success

Congratulations to our 1st year Futsal team and coach Mr Monahan on winning the Cavan county Futsal competition. Pictured above are students who attended Congratulations to our Comhairle na nÓg. panel. Three of our students were elected to Cavan Comhairle na nÓg.

 

Congratulations to Cillian Moran, Arnoldas Juska and Daniel Oyeleye who represented St Pat’s in the North East schools BIPPS tournament. The County School team took home the winning plate. Well done to all involved.

Refurbished outdoor and indoor handball alleys almost complete.

Our newly refurbished outdoor and indoor handball alleys are nearing completion. Students will be delighted to know that on their return from the Halloween mid-term break they will have use of all six alleys. The indoor handball alleys will be completely refurbished by the end of the Halloween mid-term. The two racket ball courts have been extended to full size hand ball courts with new male and female dressing rooms. A Night with The Cavan Singers

St Pats are HUGE success at Cavan Singers Summer Proms.
What a night! Thank you to the Cavan Singers for a wonderful nights entertainment. From “The Writing on the Wall” to a beautiful rendition of “Loch Lomond” and a very intricate “Polovstian Dances”, the night was complimented by the St Pat’s Trad Band, Jazz/Blues, Brass and full choir. A well deserved standing ovation to all involved. Thank you Mr Tackney for all you and your students hard work.

St. Patrick’s College Law Team took part in a recent Law Day workshop as part of their preparations for the National Mock Trial Championships taking place on Saturday April 21st in the Criminal Courts of Justice Dublin.
Always hugely popular with Law students, this unique Legal workshop involves a Barrister or Senior Counsel visiting the school and providing an overview of the Irish legal system in the morning session and presiding over a Mock Trial in the afternoon. The visiting Barrister Ms. Ruth Colgan BL along with St. Patrick’s College Law Team Coach Mr. Conor Mc Guigan facilitated the workshop providing students with a unique insight regarding the workings of the Irish and European Legal systems.
This workshop also included Ms. Colgan informing students of her daily experience of the legal profession. The Law students gained an excellent insight of the entire Legal system, the Judiciary and its functions and wish to thank Ms. Colgan for visiting the school.

Double champions in North East A Division Basketball.
Congratulations St Pat’s 1st and 2nd year teams are now double champions in North East A Division Basketball. St Pat’s defeated St Mary’s, Drogheda, 58 42 in first years and defeated Dunshaughlin Community College, 44 25 in second years. Well done to all concerned and trainers Ms Marie McGovern and Mr Bogue.

Congratulations to Aaron O’Connell and David English who recently took part in the Phil Speaks Debating Competition in the Philosophical Society in Trinity College, Dublin. Each debate consists of four teams of two; Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government and Closing Opposition. The motion for the first debate was “This house would ban UFC”. St Pat’s spoke in favour for Opening Government, and came second out of the four teams in that debate. National Mock Trial Competition

National Mock Trial Competition
The St. Patrick’s College law team are preparing to participate in the Public Access to Law, National Mock Trials Competition 2018 which will be held in the Criminal Courts of justice (CCJ). Under the direction of Mr. Mc Guigan, students will acquire research, presentation and public speaking skills and also a knowledge of the role of advocacy. The competition provides a significant platform for students to excel in areas of legal reporting, role play and court room artistry, aspects of legislation and the workings of the legal system.
The competition invited teams from over 30 schools across Ireland to present themselves before real judges of the court where students assume the role of Barristers, Solicitors, Jurors Witnesses and Garda. The overall winner of the competition will be asked to participate in the World Championship competition which takes place in the USA in the autumn.

 

 

Thank’s to Crime Journalist, Paul Williams who gave our Transition Year students a talk about life as a journalist in today’s Ireland. Pictured above is Paul with students, David Leddy and Joel Sogi, along with TY coordinators Ms. McMahon and Ms. Murphy, presenting him with an Art work by Cavan artist Jackie O’Neill. Pictured above are members of TY along with teachers, Ms Carolan and TY coordinator Ms Murphy during a visit to the Garage Theatre in Monaghan where they saw the French film “My life as a courgette”. This was followed by a guided tour of Monaghan Museum of History with a focus on archeology. A great day thoroughly enjoyed by all.
