Maths week 2016 kicked off nationally and internationally on October 15th. This event is a week that celebrates all things mathematically and encourages people young and old
to engage with Mathematics in a different way. Maths week in St. Pat’s 2016 was definitely the most successful to date. 144 first years took part in a Maths based quized that not only tested their mathematical knowledge but also that of mathematical facts. The whole school were encouraged to complete a puzzle sheet testing the student’s problem solving skills. We also look forward to plenty of art work as students in first and second year compete in a Maths themed poster competition. Those at senior cycle completed the Prism Challenge. This competition is run in conjunction with NUI Galway and again tests the problem solving abilities of students. Those who do well in the competition will be invited to attend Maths Olympiad classes in one of the Universities and thus try out for the Irish Maths Olympiad Team. Sean T. Murphy in TY was the top scoring student in this event. Well done all involved.

‘My Family’ by Ciaran O’Brien.
My family is small you see,
Mam, Dad and then there’s me.
My Mam’s from Mayo,
My Dad is a Dub,
With me on the side-line, like an eager-watching sub.
Next Saturday their counties will clash yet again,
To the victors, the spoils, the heroes of men.
Final whistle will blow,
One happy, One sad.
No matter what the outcome, it’s still mam and dad.

St. Patrick’s College and Loreto College, Cavan played hosts to visiting Germans last week. Sixteen boys and girls from Europagymnasium in Woerth-am-Rhein (near Karlsruhe) spent a week living with families in the Cavan area and attending school with their exchange partners. Last October the Irish students spent a week living in Woerth with their German friends.

This is the first time the exchange between the three schools has taken place. It has proved to be a great success for all involved and will hopefully continue on a regular basis.

Senator Diarmuid Wilson and Deputy Joe O’Reilly facilitated a question and answer session for us, with Deputies Smith and O’Reilly sponsoring refreshments. Whilst in the Houses of the Oireachtas, we viewed both the Dáil Chamber and the Seanad in session with Senator David Norris taking the floor while we were there. The trip to Dáil Éireann was both interesting and informative. Copies of the Proclamation were stamped for us as a memento of the occasion. Boolean logic participants
November 2nd was the bicentenary of the famous Irish Mathematician George Boole. He was the first professor of Mathematics at University College Cork and the inventor of Boolean logic. George Boole is often referred to as the forefather of the Information age. Along with students in 45 other countries, students in Ms. Corcoran’s first year and TY Maths class participated in a module on Boolean logic to celebrate the bicentenary. Students learned about the truth tables, logic gates and how games like Candy Crush and Mindcraft use Boolean logic to work. This workshop awarded each student who participated a certificate to aknowledge their participation in a celebration of the legacy and incredible contribution George Boole made to the digital world we live in. Well done to all those who participated.
